Windows Defender that ships with 8 is a total AV/AM app, if it weren't to shut off when another first line of defense installed, there would be a serious clash going on, plus resource usage would run through the ceiling. On those, Defender may play well with Norton 360. From Windows 7 down through XP, Windows Defender is simply a spyware app, a second line of defense. Windows Defender on Windows 8 is an entirely different product than what ships with Windows 7 (& possibly Vista), & is an optional download for XP. Windows Defender will shut down is another app such as Norton is installed. But Norton 360 is a first line defense, so is Windows Defender on Windows 8. One other thing, MalwareBytes & SuperAntiSpyware plays well with Windows Defender, as they're second line defenses.
